The First Annual International K-H Service–Learning Research Conference in 2001 was chaired by Andrew Furco, Ph.D., Director, International Center for Research on Civic Engagement and Service-Learning and hosted by the University of California at Berkeley. This conference brought together 350 researchers, policymakers, and others interested in service-learning research to share and hear about new findings, research agendas and emerging issues. The highly successful conference resulted in the publication of Service-Learning Through a Multidisciplinary Lens and began the broader dissemination of service-learning research.
In 2002, the Second Annual International Conference, attended by nearly 400 individuals, was hosted by Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, and chaired by Janet Eyler, Ph.D., Professor of the Practice of Education. The resulting publication was entitled Deconstructing Service-Learning: Research Exploring Context, Participation, and Impact.
The Third Annual International Conference was held in Salt Lake City, UT, in 2003, and resulted in publication of New Perspectives in Service-Learning: Research to Advance the Field. Marshall Welch, Ph.D., Director of the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center, chaired this conference.
The Fourth Annual International Conference was co-hosted in 2004 by RMC Research Corporation and Clemson University in Greenville, SC, and co-chaired by Shelley Billig, Ph.D. and Nancy Dunlap. The resultant publication was entitled Improving Service-Learning Practice: Research on Models to Enhance Impacts.
The Fifth Annual International Conference was held at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI in 2005; the resulting publication was entitled Exploring the Premise: Advancing Knowledge and Transforming Lives. Karen McKnight Casey, Director of the Center for Service-Learning and Civic Engagement, chaired this conference.
The Sixth Annual International Conference was hosted by Portland State University in 2006 in Portland, OR, with 425 attendees from 18 countries. Sherril B. Gelmon, Dr.P.H., Professor of Public Health, chaired the conference. The resulting publication was entitled From Passion to Objectivity: International and Cross-Disciplinary Perspectives on Service-Learning Research.
The Seventh International Research Conference on Service-Learning and Community Engagement was hosted by Florida Campus Compact and a consortium of universities including the University of South Florida, Florida State University, University of Central Florida, Miami Dade College, and the University of Miami, under the leadership of Dee Dee Rasmussen of Florida Campus Compact, with nearly 400 attendees. The resulting publication is under development and will be available at the 2008 conference.
