REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS: IARSLCE CONFERENCE HOST FOR 2011 AND 2012 CONFERENCES
Organizations and educational institutions committed to research on service-learning and community engagement are encouraged to submit proposals to serve as hosts for the  2011 and 2012 Annual Conferences of the International Association for Research on Service-Learning and Community Engagement (IARSLCE or “the Association”).   Proposals are due by FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 2010.   Click Here for complete Request for Proposals.

 

The IARSLCE Research Award recognizes outstanding career contributions to scholarly endeavors addressing service-learning and community engagement. It is designed to recognize research that systematically addresses the exploration and understanding of the field. For the purpose of this award, “research” is broadly defined to include all paradigms of scholarly endeavor, with particular emphasis on empirically-based research. The recipient is expected to give an address at the annual research conference that relates to his/her research the year after receiving the award.

The recipient of the 2009 Distinguished Research Award is Dwight Giles, Jr., Ph.D., Higher Education Administration Doctoral Program, Graduate College of Education, University of Massachusetts Boston.

Early Career Research Award

The Early Career Research Award recognizes outstanding early career contributions to scholarly endeavors addressing service-learning and community engagement. It is designed to encourage research that systematically addresses the exploration and understanding of the field. For the purpose of this award, “research” is broadly defined to include all paradigms of scholarly endeavor, with particular emphasis on empirically-based research. The recipient is expected to make a presentation at the annual research conference that relates to his/her research.

The recipient of the 2009 Early Career Research Award is Nicholas (Nick) Longo, Ph.D., Director of Global Studies and Assistant Professor, Department of Public and Community Service, Providence College, Providence, RI.

Dissertation Award

The IARSLCE Dissertation Award recognizes a dissertation that advances research on service-learning and/or community engagement through rigorous and innovative inquiry. 

IARSLCE presented two Dissertation Awards for 2008:  One to Julie Hatcher of Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, and one to Emily Janke of The Pennsylvania State University. Honorable Mention goes to Janice McMillan of the University of Cape Town.

2008 Recipient
The recipient of the 2009 Dissertation Research Award is Alan Bloomgarden. Alan defended his dissertation in
August 2008 in Educational Policy and Leadership/Higher Education from the University of Massachusetts
Amherst. His advisor was KerryAnn O’Meara (recipient of the 2008 Early Career Research Award). The title of his
dissertation is: Prestige Culture and Community-Based Faculty Work.

The First Annual International K-H Service–Learning Research Conference in 2001 was chaired by Andrew Furco, Ph.D., Director, International Center for Research on Civic Engagement and Service-Learning and hosted by the University of California at Berkeley.  This conference brought together 350 researchers, policymakers, and others interested in service-learning research to share and hear about new findings, research agendas and emerging issues.
